Many residential homes and apartments are built with small primary bathrooms due to space limitations. While these spaces are on the petite size, they can still be beautiful and functional with the right bath accessories and design choices. Here are a few things you can to in a small bathroom that make a big difference.
Use Cool Colors on the Walls
Designers know that warm colors make things seem closer and cool colors create the impression of distance. If you have a short bathroom or the walls are close together, consider using cool tones to create a little bit of visual space. Light colors also work well by creating a clean and bright feeling in any room. Cool colors include:
- Blue
- Green
- Violet
- White
- Gray
Avoid Heavy Fabrics
Heavy fabric shower curtains and window curtains take up a lot of space. Opt for sheer window curtains or blinds instead. You may even be able to apply a privacy window film to existing glass and avoid the curtain altogether. Consider installing a glass shower door in place of the shower curtain to remove this visual blockage too.
Use Large Mirrors
Go big with your bathroom mirror or even, mirror one side of the bathroom. The reflection in a mirror helps create the illusion of space without a lot of extra work. When using mirrors in this way, avoid framed mirrors. Opt for flat mirrors that hug the wall.
Consider a Walk-In Shower
Modern zero-threshold, walk-in showers are very compatible with small bathrooms as they remove all visual and physical obstructions. Most professional remodelers offer bath conversions that tear out the old bath/shower combo and install a new shower. These renovations are quick to complete, and are also designed for improved safety and comfort, which is beneficial to everyone in the household.
Use Small Tile Patterns
Traditional and large size tile patterns don’t work as well in a space-challenged bath. Instead, choose small tile patterns like herringbone or 1” x 4” rectangular tile. If you are having trouble finding these sizes, look for patterns that are wider, rather than taller. The extra width will help make the walls seem a little further apart.
These are just a few of the small bathroom design tricks you can use to make your bath seem a little more spacious.
